Growing Our Service!
At Tree of Life we often talk about the students growing as servant leaders in God’s Kingdom. To this end, we have made it a priority to re-institute (after the pandemic) our high school requirement of 20 service hours per year, praying that it will mobilize the students in service to their neighborhoods and within their churches. It has been fantastic to see them live out their faith outside of our walls, and find joy in serving others.
As our school year comes to a close, we decided to organize a few “Friday Service Field Trips” to provide even more opportunities for the students and these have been a hit. Two weeks ago we were able to help send a team of High school students to serve at the “Jog-a-thon” event of our Clintonville elementary campus. They ran carnival games and cheered on the younger students as they raised money for Tree of Life. The following week about 25 of us traveled to a beautification project in the Milo-Grogan neighborhood with a local organization called Cultivate CDC. We were able to plant a garden, stain a fence, and perform other tasks that helped the ‘green space’ continue to be a safe and uplifting sanctuary for the residents. Not only did the students enjoy serving for the afternoon, they were reminded of the needs right here in our city and how they can help meet them. #HowWeTOL
LifeGroup Update
Over the last few months in LifeGroups we have been pressing into our spiritual theme for the year, "In The Spirit", and unpacking different ways the Holy Spirit works in the lives of Christ's followers. As we head into February (which is Black History Month!) we decided that this was the perfect time to focus on how the power of Christ brings true UNITY in the midst of our diversity. Yesterday we kicked off the month by inviting Pastor Gerald Murphy from Garden City Church to speak at our chapel. He shared candidly about his own spiritual journey and then opened the Word to teach the students about God's heart for the nations! In the weeks to come we will be spending time in our smaller groups getting deeper into the Word, sharing more of our stories with one another and discussing how we can continue to respect & honor one another as image bearers of God.
Community Service Hours Requirement...Reminder!!
How are your student's required community service hours coming along? Click HERE for a recent reminder Mr. Shah shared with the student body during our Monday morning devotional time.
Schedule a Teacher Conference...Anytime!
As we wrap up the 1st academic quarter, allow me to share how to easily schedule a conference with anyone of your student's teachers. We no longer have one day solely dedicated to conferences but more of an "on-demand" format where parents may schedule an in-person or virtual conference with any teacher throughout the school year. You may schedule by clicking on the green tab to the right labeled, "Schedule a Teacher Conference." There is also a tab of all faculty email addresses for easy access. You may watch the how-to-video below for conference scheduling.
What Were We Up to on the High School Retreat?
Your high schooler may or may not have mentioned anything about their time on the high school retreat. We trust they had a great experience. Take a moment to hear Mr. Jon Shah share a short review about the retreat and what we are trying to accomplish during these important moments of our school life.
Required Community Service Hours..hear our heart!
One of the most revolutionary teachings of Jesus was when He explained to His followers that “whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” This is why one of our priorities at Tree of Life is to envision and equip every one of our students to SERVE GENEROUSLY in their community. We pray for God to give each student a vision for those around them, and a heart to sincerely love their neighbors, both those inside our community here at Tree of Life, and also outside of our walls in the city of Columbus.
To this end, in previous years we have had a community service requirement of 20 hours per year. In the last few years - as we dealt with the effects of covid - we needed to set aside this goal, but are now pleased to re-institute it for the 2022-23 school year. Our hope is for at least half of these services to take place in spaces outside of the family and the school. Many students already have opportunities to serve in their local churches or in their neighborhoods, and we encourage creativity in this endeavor. For those struggling to find opportunities, we will be also providing some opportunities as a school, as we continue to try and partner with organizations and churches here in Columbus.
As the students complete some of the service hours, we have a simple method for them to report these to the school. Please watch this video on how to input your students’ hours. If you have any questions at all about this requirement or the process, please feel free to contact mary.bondurant@tolcs.org or jon.shah@tolcs.org.
